Regency Short Stays Meet Feudal Japan [WIP]
Project type
Sewing, Embroidery,
Garment Construction
This pair of short stays is much like what ladies would have worn in the Regency era but with a cultural twist. The outer layer of linen will be embroidered in a traditional koginzashi pattern. As an undergarment which will be worn multiple times, the surface of the stays is an excellent place to apply koginzashi - a counted embroidery technique used by the feudal working class of Japan to both reinforce areas of wear as well as add warmth and thickness to thin linen garments
While normally short stays would only have lacing in either the front or the back, I have redrafted the pattern pieces so that there are laces at both. This is for ease of putting the garment on and achieving the correct lift and shape of the chest for dresses of the time.
It is made using the RedThreaded pattern for 1810's Short Stays. I have redrafted the pattern in order to add lacing to the front as well. This project is currently a WIP as I am working on embroidering the outer layer of linen with a koginzashi repeat pattern.
Grommets are not HA but they provide stability so I chose to use them. They are covered with thread by hand to better blend in and protect lacing from any rough or sharp grommet edges for smooth lacing.
Materials: coutil (stabilization inner layer), 25 count evenweave natural linen, cotton sashiko thread, twill tape ties, grommets and laces.
